Learner motorcycle and moped riders are required by law to complete a Compulsory Basic Training course (CBT) to validate their motorcycle licence. This course is designed to ensure that you are able to ride safely and competently on public roads. The CBT certificate is only valid for two years, during which time you should take further training and then your motorcycle or moped test.

Completing a CBT course allows you to ride a motorcycle or scooter up to 125cc (50cc if 16) on UK roads, with some restrictions: You MUST display “L” plates front and rear; you must NOT ride on motorways; you must NOT carry passengers.

CBT comprises five elements (as set out in law), the combination of which allows us to provide a comprehensive training scheme which is adaptable to all skill levels and ability. The course ensures understanding of the Highway Code, as well as the opportunity to learn to control your machine in a safe off-road environment.

This course is not only a legal requirement; it is also an essential introduction to becoming a safe and competent rider. Our CBT courses are run from our base at Fleetville Junior School, 228 Hatfield Road, Fleetville, St Albans, AL1 4LW

What will I need to bring to my lesson?

We will provide you with all of the equipment needed to safely take part in the training session. This includes a bike, helmet, gloves and other protective gear. However, you need to ensure that you arrive wearing appropriate clothing and footwear.

Once booked on to your training session you will receive an email outlining exactly what you need to bring with you to your lesson.

How long does the course take to complete?

The course normally lasts for a full day. Our booking slots are in the morning from start from 8.15am in the morning and the lessons normally finish at around 4.30pm in the afternoon.

However, this is simply an estimation based on average time taken to complete the course tasks. Everyone is different and as such, everyone learns at their own pace. Your course may take slightly more time depending on your own skill and ability level.

Why do I need a CBT?

It is a legal requirement before riding unaccompanied on the road. Before you can undertake most further training courses you must demonstrate that you have undertaken a CBT course.

You do NOT need to complete a CBT course if:

  • Have already passed your standard car driving test (before 1st of February 2001) and only want to ride a moped (up to 50cc).
  • Already have a full moped licence (passed after 1st of December 1990).
  • If you already have a motorcycle licence for one category and simply want to upgrade to another.

How long is my CBT valid for?

Your CBT is valid for two years after completion. This gives you time to gain experience and undertake further training ready to pass your full motorcycle test.

What does the CBT involve?

Our CBT consists of both off-road practice and theory training.

There are 5 parts to the course:

  • Introduction and eyesight check
  • On-site training
  • On-site riding
  • On-road training
  • On-road riding

These five stages allow us to ensure that by the time you complete your course you will earn everything from how to control the motorcycle safely and competently, to knowledge and understanding of the Highway Code.

Can I use my own bike?

Yes, you may use your own bike but legally you cannot ride it unaccompanied on the road until you have completed the CBT course.

What kind of bike will I be using?

We use Sym 50cc mopeds, Sym 125cc scooter, Keeway RKS 125cc and Yamaha YBR 125cc bikes for all our CBT courses.
